IRAQ the Vote! 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
check it out: http://www.iraqthevote.org

It's an international effort to get people from all over the world to petition to put a referendum on the next ballot in Iraq asking all of the Iraqi people whether they would like Coalition forces to stay or leave. The US has "pledged" that it will leave when Iraq tells it to leave (uh huh, right) but this can't hurt.

I'm not sure how old the site is, but it looks like at my signing, I was number 3,065...hopefully with its international scope they can get big numbers fast.

Pass the word on - petitions certainly aren't going to end the war of course, but if this gets big, and recognized, it will be a great thing to hold up to the Hawks' faces when we need to.

I think that there is no way that the puppet government in iraq is going to allow this. Besides there have been plenty of polls of Iraqis which show that they do not want us there and the incessant attacks on everything the occupation represents supports this. Furthormore because it is not a winnable campaign it can actually lead to wasted resource and demoralization. There is not strong enough forces to stop or influence what the US does there and our efforts should be to build that. I think that a referendum in local communities, campuses, cities would be a more logical step that we could actively build and grow from and a successful referendum return would bolster the movement by showing mass support for its aims.
