Issued by the Campus Antiwar Network (CAN) Coordinating Committee - 1/21/04
At our last national conference on November 1st and 2nd in Chicago,
CAN passed a resolution in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for
self-determination with an overwhelming majority of the delegates
voting in favor. CAN is opposed to the oppression of the Palestinian
people and the illegal occupation of Palestine. We believe that the
occupation of Palestine and the occupation of Iraq are inextricably
linked by US imperial plans in the Middle East. We think that
addressing the issues of both Iraq and Palestine will strengthen the
movement politically and build deeper ties between those individuals
and organizations fighting to end occupation.
CAN stands in solidarity with the dozens of Arab and Muslim groups
who believe that opposition to the occupation of Palestine should be
asserted at the March 20, 2004 demonstrations. On the day that we mark
the anniversary of the US?s invasion and occupation of Iraq, it will
also be crucial for us to address the decades long occupation of
Palestine which is made possible by the funding and support of the US.
CAN urges organizing committees around the country to take on
opposition to the occupation of Palestine as a central element of the
March 20th demonstrations.
We hope to continue working with all of the organizations in our
movement whose diverse viewpoints share the common ground of working
towards peace and justice. We seek to build on the momentum of earlier
unity achieved in the streets around the world. CAN looks forward to
engaging in healthy debate on these issues with anyone and everyone in
our struggle.
In solidarity,
